This Startup Keeps Human Skin Alive for a Month So AI Can Study It

Who is behind this?
Michael Polansky is probably best known to most people as Lady Gaga's partner, but before that, he was a top deputy to tech investor Sean Parker (Facebook's first president), where he eventually ran Parker's family office and helped lead his cancer research initiatives. Since 2022, Polansky has been quietly building something completely different: a biotech startup called Outer Biosciences, and he's only now talking about it publicly.
The core idea: skin that stays alive outside the body
Normally, if you take a sample of human skin out of the body for research, it starts to break down within days. Outer Biosciences has found a way to keep donated skin tissue alive for up to a full month โ far longer than the industry norm. They do this with a proprietary system that continuously feeds the tissue nutrients and clears away its waste products, essentially life support for a small patch of skin.
Why does that extra time matter? Because a lot of what happens to skin โ like collagen breaking down and rebuilding, or changes in pigmentation โ happens slowly, over weeks, not days. If your skin sample dies after 72 hours, you simply can't observe those slower processes. A month gives researchers a much longer window to watch skin actually respond and change.
To be clear about where the skin comes from: it's sourced from vetted biobanks (organizations that collect donated tissue for research under medical oversight), with proper consent from donors, and it arrives de-identified โ meaning no personal information is attached to it.
Where the AI comes in
Here's the clever loop: an AI model predicts which untested chemical compounds might have a beneficial effect on some specific skin function โ say, boosting collagen or evening out pigmentation. Those specific compounds then actually get tested on the living skin tissue. The real-world results โ what actually happened to real skin โ get fed back into the AI model, making its next round of predictions better. Then the cycle repeats.
Polansky says this loop is already producing results: six candidate ingredients are currently active in the company's pipeline, plus several dozen more promising "hits" waiting to be explored further, with new candidates emerging roughly every six weeks.
Why this could matter for skincare
Right now, there are only about 120 to 130 skin-care active ingredients approved by the FDA (the U.S. agency that regulates what can go into products). Add in additional research-backed cosmetic ingredients that aren't formally FDA-approved actives, and the total pool is still only around 200. That's a surprisingly small list, given how enormous the skincare industry is โ most products are just remixing the same limited set of ingredients in different combinations.
Outer Biosciences isn't planning to launch its own skincare brand. Instead, its plan is to license whatever new ingredients it discovers to existing beauty and pharmaceutical companies, who would then use them to create new products.
The company today
Outer Biosciences has raised about $23 million so far and employs 19 people, based near Cambridge, Massachusetts. Polansky himself studied applied mathematics and computer science at Harvard and worked at the investment firm Bridgewater Associates before his years working alongside Sean Parker โ a somewhat unexpected path to running a skin-and-AI biotech startup.
